It’s official – Costco is coming to Barrhaven!
Jan Harder has made it official – Costco will soon be coming to Barrhaven at the corner of Maravista and Strandherd. Yeah, it was probably the worst kept secret in the business community, but rumor has it that 3 sites in the Ottawa area were being considered, so we can count our blessings that we were chosen.
As far as the site plan goes, here are the latest drawings. As mentioned in a previous post, it seems the Barrhaven Costco will also feature a gas bar which should help local consumers lower their monthly transportation costs.
Traffic and light pollution concerns will surely become issues as the location is very close to residential neighborhoods. Strandherd road has been widened to 4 lanes, which should help, but the stretch between Kennevale and Jockvale remains a two lane road. Further widening of the road is complicated due to the presence of the railroad crossing.
Furthermore, the site is not all about Costco. As the above illustration indicates, several more retail and commercial office space is documented on the plan. My guess is that we‘re going to hear of several more announcements in terms of retail in the coming weeks.

Sure, Barrhaven gets a Costco with a gas bar but they can’t put one in Kanata. Residents of Kanata and beyond have been asking for years why is there no gas bar at that Costco. Sucks!!!

I heard they tried to put Gas in Kanata, but couldn’t get zoning for that location. Silly “environment” stuff, being too close to the carp river watershed and all.
I wouldn’t be too worried about the gas bar. I have had a membership for many years and have had to drive to merivale road as it is closest to me. I never end up getting gas because the line ups are insane. Very often right out the lot which affects traffic. It isn’t worth the 5 cents that it is supposed to be. Not uncommon to be in line at solid 1/2 hour or more.
When will they take resumes ?

It is not needed in bargain as much as bank st south….out in greely we have nothing but a commute to do shopping….and growth out here is needed

Traffic on strandherd is already a nightmare..convenience will be great but the traffic nightmare will only get worse…Finish the construction on greenbank already!

It’s cute that whoever created the plan thinks that’s enough parking for Costco. Not to mention the huge stretch of Strandherd that’s still two lanes for the foreseeable future.
That parking lot does seem a little small.
