Blood donation process
When donating blood, the standard donation is approximately 450 mL, slightly less than half a litre or two cups. This represents a small portion of the blood in a person’s body, as the average adult has about 5 litres. The entire process takes just over an hour.

Before you donate
Looking after your health is important. On the day of your donation, there are a few extra things to do:
- Make sure you drink lots of water; eat a healthy meal and get a good night’s sleep.
- Having a salty snack and 500 mL of water before you donate is a good idea.
- Make sure to bring valid ID
- Donated before? Please bring your blood donor card (it has a full name and signature).
- First-time donating or can’t find your card? Bring ID with full name and signature or full name and photograph. We’ll then order you a blood donor card for next time.

Donor centre volunteers
Greet donors with a smile, make conversation and accompany them throughout their donation process. Help them feel welcome and comfortable. The care and attention you give is very often a key reason why donors return. As one of the last faces donors see on their way out, you play a critical role in the success of future blood donor clinics.
Volunteer Leaders
Help host, coordinate and promote blood donation events in local communities and workplaces or be a team leader in our donor centres. As a volunteer leader, you will also work closely with our employees and learn how to recruit, train and schedule volunteers.
In-community volunteers & public awareness
Our in-community volunteers play an integral part in spreading awareness for blood donation. They promote donation events and recruit new donors in their local communities. Opportunities are also available for volunteers to join our Speaker’s Bureau to help promote our work and the ongoing need for donors.
We provide the training and tools to help you succeed and we are committed to ensuring you are fully prepared for your new assignment.

- Giving you a meaningful and rewarding role that suits your skills and abilities
- Providing you with training specific to your role
- Giving you the support and tools you need to perform your tasks
- Providing a corporate insurance policy to protect you while you’re volunteering on our behalf
