Barrhaven resident to run 100km to raise money for End Kids Cancer
Today’s guest blog post was submitted by Barrhaven resident Brian Double who will be teaming up with Boston Pizza this week to raise funds for END KIDS CANCER. Join us on Wednesday at Boston Pizza to help support Brian in his quest to help defeat childhood cancer.
Pints and Pizza for Pint-sized People September 10th at Boston Pizza
On October 4th, I will be running 100 km, almost 2.5 marathons, from Ottawa to Montebello. If that sounds crazy to you, it’s because it is! But I think you’ll agree that the reason why justifies this temporary insanity.
I ran my first race, a half marathon (21 km), in New Zealand in 2006, and ever since I have been challenging myself to do something more difficult. At first, my challenge was to increase my speed, and I did. When I felt I’d achieved as fast as I could, I started to increase the difficulty by doing trail runs. Last year, my challenge was to complete all three distances of the Spartan race – the Trifecta – and I did.
I have not always been successful but I learned from all my experience. It had always been about my personal growth. Last year, I started to feel that something was not quite right about that…
I had learned about a group of athletes called GoodGuysTri who coupled their passion for running and “doing good”. I followed them through Twitter as this amazing team each completed a run of 100 km and raised over $100K to END KIDS CANCER. I knew then that I wanted to be part of that in 2014. I would not be running for me but to raise money for an important cause.
I have been training hard but the distance is still going to be brutal. I expect it’ll take 11-12 hours to complete. I have already raised more than $2K, but I’d love to raise so much more. That’s where you come in!
On Wednesday, September 10th, from 6-9pm, Boston Pizza (Barrhaven) has generously offered 10% of sales from our group as a donation to the GoodGuysTri team. We’ve also gathered up some AMAZING raffle prizes. Bring your friends and families for what will certainly be a fun night.
